Nascimient Del rio Sonador is a high flow spring located in the mountains behind Puerto Plata in the Dominican republic. The Rio Sonador is actually two separate springs that are only about 50 meters apart and together flow into the same place and make up the rio Sonador.

Surprisingly both springs are completely separate and not connected, not only did the survey confirm this, but also one side can be totally blown out and undiveable while the other will be crystal clear.

Access is difficult and the approach hike has a multitude of steep descents and ascents with psycho cows and super slippery clay everywere making access to this cave a mission.

The two springs are very different, the smaller entrance is the shallow side has a max depth of 22 meters and as of now comes up in a dry cave that continues until you hit a waterfall and another sump that keeps going.

To access the deep side you must first dive sump 1 and then get out of the water and climb up a waterfall were all the water from this entire high flow cave is pouring directly onto your head.

Then after entering sump 2 it’s about a five hundred meter swim and without warning the floor disappears and the cave passage turns into an epic canyon that goes from zero to over one hundred meters deep. At the end of the canyon the ceiling drops down and dips under a ledge that opens up into a huge void.

The current eol is at -101meters with no floor or walls in sight. Planing to the push dive in the deep side of Sonador is difficult as the conditions depend on the rain which is unpredictable in these mountains and will require not only sub 150 meters logistics but also some luck as the conditions can change without warning.

Project Antillothrix is a multi-organizational partnership formed to conduct biodiversity surveys and excavations of paleontological cave sites in the Dominican Republic. Together, researchers and divers from the City University of New York (CUNY), Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Museo del Hombre Dominicano (MHD), and the Dominican Republic Speleological Society (DRSS) have documented and collected a trove of vertebrate fossils for study and preservation since the inception of this collaboration in 2011.
