Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s „Operation Milagro” („Operation Miracle”) is dedicated to the conservation of the endangered vaquita porpoise, a species on the brink of extinction. Sea Shepherd’s new research vessel, the RV Martin Sheen is collecting data in an effort to collaborate with scientific and conservation efforts to contribute to the survival of the remaining vaquitas.
By documenting the plight of these endangered cetaceans and conducting outreach in the region with marine biologists, vaquita experts and other organizations the goal of preserving this unique species can be achieved.
Numerous non-profit organisations and scientists are working in cooperation with the Mexican government and President Enrique Pena Nieto to conserve the remaining vaquita porpoises in this their unique habitat.
Mexico is inspiring hope for the vaquitas by taking vital steps to conserve this species found only in the waters of Mexico’s Gulf of California. However, it will take nothing short of a collaborative, concerted effort to protect these shy and peaceful marine mammals from extinction.
Working together, we can bring about a miracle!
